Artecinema Festival Turns 30 in Naples with Focus on Female Creativity

festival-fair · 2026-04-26

The 30th edition of Artecinema, the International Festival of Films on Contemporary Art, takes place in Naples from October 9 to 12, 2025. Founded and directed by Laura Trisorio, the festival this year explores biography, identity, and authorship, with a spotlight on female creativity and artistic languages that have reshaped art history from the late 20th century onward. The opening night at Teatro San Carlo features the Italian premiere of Lisa Immordino Vreeland's Jean Cocteau. From October 10 to 12, screenings continue at Teatro Augusteo with free admission, presenting 27 films from the US, France, UK, Italy, and other countries, many in world or national premieres. Key films include Carla Gutiérrez's Frida, which gives voice to Frida Kahlo through texts and animations; Marie-Eve De Grave's Louise Bourgeois, la sculpture et la colère, linking trauma and creation; and Barbara Visser's Alreadymade, which reopens the Duchamp case by attributing Fountain to Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven. Contemporary artist profiles include Dyani White Hawk, Howardena Pindell, and Puppies Puppies. Other films address visual memory (I Am Martin Parr, Ernest Cole: Lost and Found, Napalm Girl) and architecture (La casa di Cini Boeri, NUVOLA). Over three decades, Artecinema has presented over 800 documentaries and collaborated with more than 600 artists, directors, and producers, extending screenings to schools, peripheral neighborhoods, and the juvenile detention center of Nisida.
