Arte Povera pioneer Emilio Prini dies at 73

artist · 2026-05-05

Emilio Prini, a key figure in the Arte Povera movement, died on 1 September 2016 at age 73. Known for his reclusive lifestyle, Prini had minimal public appearances in recent decades. Gallerist Franco Toselli, a longtime friend, recalled Prini's refusal to take subjective responsibility for his work. Prini participated in landmark shows including the first Arte Povera exhibition at Galleria La Bertesca in Genoa and Harald Szeemann's 1969 'When Attitudes Become Form' in Bern. His most productive period was 1967–1971, producing conceptually driven works. Later exhibitions included a solo show at Ancienne Douane in Strasbourg (1995), Documenta X in Kassel (1997), and the major Arte Povera survey at Tate Modern in London (2001). Prini once requested a life-size cover image on the magazine Segno, as recalled by editor Lucia Spadano.
