Arte Abierto expands to new venues across Mexico with Carsten Höller slide

institutional · 2026-05-13

Arte Abierto, the Mexican art initiative founded seven years ago in Artz Pedregal, Mexico City, has expanded to multiple locations including Los Cabos and a future site in Polanco. Developed with Grupo SOMA and Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos, the project places contemporary art in commercial spaces to reach non-specialist audiences. Director Mónica de Haro emphasizes immersive formats and direct artist-viewer relationships without traditional curatorial mediation. Institutional director Gabriela Correa notes that visitors often encounter art accidentally, with pedagogical devices integrated throughout. Recent exhibitions include Cristina Umaña Durán's 'Los tiempos del aire' at Pedregal and Abraham Cruzvillegas's 'Autorretrato flameante...' in Los Cabos, open until October. A new Polanco venue will feature one of Latin America's largest slides by Carsten Höller. The initiative also supports young artists and experimental projects, with a public program that invites astronomers, ecologists, and other specialists to expand conversations around artworks. Looking toward 2029, De Haro envisions consolidation rather than rapid expansion, focusing on deepening public programming and editorial work.
