Art X Lagos postponed in solidarity with #EndSARS protests, new photography initiative launched
Art X Lagos has postponed its 2020 edition, originally scheduled to open on 6 November for five days, in response to ongoing protests against police violence in Nigeria. The fair's founder, Tokini Peterside of ART X Collective, cited respect for those killed during state repression as a key reason, though logistical disruptions also played a role. Protests have centered on the #EndSARS movement, targeting the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, a police unit with a history of abuses that was officially disbanded earlier this month. On 20 October, the Nigerian army opened fire on peaceful demonstrators during a curfew, causing deaths and injuries. ART X Collective announced a new initiative for photographers and filmmakers documenting the protests, receiving 1,000 applications, with a selection to be exhibited at the rescheduled fair. Peterside emphasized the organization's support for activists fighting police brutality and systemic inequality, noting its youth-led structure. The protests reflect broader discontent with government corruption and inequality in Nigeria. The fair's dedication to showcasing African and Diaspora artists remains unchanged despite the delay.
