Art Transfer app turns photos into Rubens and van Gogh masterpieces

digital · 2026-04-27

The Getty Museum and Google Arts & Culture have launched Art Transfer, a new app that transforms personal photographs into artworks using styles from masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Rubens, van Gogh, Edvard Munch, and Frida Kahlo. Users can apply the graphic style of selected artworks to entire photos or specific parts, such as people, objects, or backgrounds. Available works include Franz Xaver Winterhalter's "Portrait of Leonilla Princess of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn," Jacques-Louis David's "The Farewell of Telemachus and Eucharis," and Anthony van Dyck's "Portrait of Agostino Pallavicini," as well as ancient pieces like a Romano-Egyptian mummy portrait from the early 2nd century AD and a Greek engraved gemstone depicting a grasshopper dated 425-400 BC. To use Art Transfer, users open the Google Arts & Culture app, select the camera icon, and choose "Art Transfer" to either take a new photo or pick one from their gallery. The resulting creation can be viewed as a GIF. The Getty Museum encourages users to share their works on social media with the tag @GettyMuseum. The app is available for iOS and Android.
