Art-Themed Board Games for the Holidays

For the 2021 holiday season, Artribune presents a selection of art-themed board games for adults and children. Cas Holman, an American designer, created Geemo, launched at the NY MoMA Design Store in 2007, featuring flexible magnetic limbs. Her company Heroes Will Rise also produces Imagination Playground, a large-scale mobile storage unit with modular blocks for adaptable play spaces. Artlink Farnesina, produced by dV Giochi in partnership with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, won the Gioco Inedito 2021 award at Lucca Comics&Games. Designed by Luca Rosa, it is a cooperative card game where 3-5 players curate an exhibition using works from the Farnesina Collection. Modern Art, a German-style board game by Reiner Knizia from 1992, satirizes art market dynamics. An updated edition by CMON, distributed in Italy by Asmodee, lets 3-5 players act as museum directors selling artworks via five auction types. The game features identifiable museums: Guggenheim New York, Tate London, MASP São Paulo, Centre Pompidou Paris, and Reina Sofía Madrid. Doodles by Jeff Lai is a fast-paced drawing game where players simultaneously sketch in 30-second rounds, guessing words without needing drawing skill.
