Art Rotterdam 2017 opens at Unesco-listed Van Nellefabriek

The 18th edition of Art Rotterdam is held at the Van Nellefabriek, a former tobacco factory and Unesco World Heritage site designed by Johannes Brinkman and Leendert van der Vlugt. The fair runs until February 12 and features five sections, with the main section being the largest. Attendance remains high at around 30,000 visitors. The experimental Projections section showcases video art, including a notable work by Italian-born artist Catherine Biocca (b. 1984), presented by Berlin's PSM Gallery. Biocca's piece features a video dialogue with characters from Giotto's Scrovegni Chapel. Italian galleries include Acappella from Naples (with Pennacchio Argentato) and Collicaligreggi from Catania (with Ra di Martino). Mieke Van Shaijk from Den Bosch presents Italian-English artist Gino Saccone's tapestries. The Intersections section highlights emerging artists without gallery representation, offering a snapshot of experimental Dutch art.
