Art Night 2021 Expands Nationwide with Month-Long Festival Program
The 2021 edition of Art Night kicks off today, transitioning from its usual one-night event in London to a month-long celebration spanning June to July. Named 'Nothing Compares 2U' after the iconic song by Prince, this festival, led by Artistic Director Helen Nisbet, delves into themes of resistance and self-empowerment against oppressive forces. The initiative features performances and commissions throughout the UK and online, aligning with the Summer Solstice. ArtReview is the exclusive media partner, showcasing Alberta Whittle's new work 'HOLDING THE LINE: a refrain in two parts,' which reflects on colonial histories and police violence via the River Thames. A billboard project by the Guerrilla Girls, 'The Male Graze,' will be displayed in eight cities, including Eastbourne and Glasgow. Other commissioned artists include Oona Doherty and Mark Leckey. This marks the festival's fifth iteration, now with a broader geographic scope and digital elements.
