Art Miami New York Launches at Pier 94 with Scandinavian Galleries and Starn Brothers Works

Art Miami New York made its inaugural appearance at Pier 94 from May 14 to 17, taking over a venue previously occupied by the Armory Fair. This fair, characterized by a more casual and louder environment than Frieze, aimed to appeal to affluent middle-class buyers in a welcoming shopping setting. Notable Scandinavian galleries participated, including Wetterling Gallery from Stockholm, which showcased layered photographic pieces by Doug and Mike Starn near the entrance. The Starn brothers also exhibited tree-themed works at London's HackelBury Fine Art, reminiscent of their installation at the South Ferry subway station. Galerie Forsblom from Helsinki displayed early works by Chantal Joffe, aligning with her Chelsea exhibition at Cheim & Read. Art Miami's expansion into New York follows its success in Miami, where it runs alongside Art Basel Miami Beach. Highlighted was Doug and Mike Starn's 'Structure of Thought 26' (2001-2013), a mixed media work on Thai papers. Unlike Frieze, the fair lacked distinct sections, with booths often stacked high, offering a different ambiance from a traditional museum. It featured galleries from various locations, some known for their eclectic tastes, yet included serious exhibitors presenting significant artworks.
