Art Brussels 2023: Top 10 Stands Selected by Artribune
The 39th edition of Art Brussels returned to the Brussels Expo fairgrounds, moving from the more central Tour & Taxis venue. The fair occupied two halls within the historic pavilion, offering comfortable but chilly spaces due to heating challenges. The majority of galleries prioritized commerce over curation, focusing on sales rather than sophisticated presentations. Artribune's selection of the top 10 stands featured a striking majority of Italian galleries, an unusual occurrence for an international fair. Standout presentations included Dep Art Gallery's optical works by Carlos Cruz-Diez, Alberto Biasi, and Ludwig Wilding; 10AM Art's focus on rediscovered Italian artist Lucia di Luciano, who was featured at the 2022 Venice Biennale; Il Ponte's display of early, nearly unknown works by Mauro Staccioli from the late 1960s; Xavier Hufkens' presentation of Nathanaëlle Herbelin's serene paintings; Richard Saltoun's showcase of Belgian artist Ria Verhaeghe; Stems Gallery's paintings by Susumu Kamijo, Koichi Sato, Jane Dickinson, and Olivier Souffrant; Pact's colorful installation designed by Parisian design studio ETTTORE featuring works by Olivier Mosset, Lise Stoufflet, Dorian Gaudin, and Bai Yiyi; Septieme's ceramic motorcycle gear sculptures by Louka Anargyros; Secci's display of Ukrainian artist Daria Dmytrenko's works; and Double V Gallery's marble intarsia pieces by Alice Guittard. The fair also included a SOLO section for select exhibitors to mount small solo shows.
