Art Brussels 2018 Showcases Global South Artists and Post-Colonial Themes in Belgian Capital

festival-fair · 2026-04-20

In April 2018, Art Brussels marked its fiftieth anniversary, attracting ArtReview to the Belgian capital. The fair showcased Otobong Nkanga’s work, including her notable video projection In Pursuit of Bling (2014), which critiques colonialism and delves into afro-futurist themes. Outside the fair, Mendes Wood DM gallery presented pieces by renowned Brazilian artist Anna Bella Geiger, whose work since the 1970s has explored Latin American identity through the lenses of gender, class, and ethnicity, alongside Letícia Ramos, known for her dark monochrome photographs of human mannequins. Additionally, Korakrit Arunanondchai's exhibition at CLEARING combined posthuman technoaesthetics with human reflections. The contemporary art center WEILS hosted Unexchangeable, featuring works by artists like Katharina Fritsch and Richard Prince, while the city's art scene increasingly embraced globalism. ArtReview's coverage was published online on 20 April 2018, coinciding with an unexpected heatwave.
