Art Basel to Mark 50th Anniversary with Intercontinental Curatorial Project in 2020

Art Basel will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2020 with a tri-city curatorial project spanning Basel, Miami Beach, and Hong Kong. The initiative, announced after the seventh edition of Art Basel Hong Kong, will be led by a diverse team of three curators: Kasper König (former director of Museum Ludwig, founder of Skulpturprojekte Münster, and curator of Manifesta 10), Christina Li (independent curator working between the Netherlands and China, director of the Hong Kong Pavilion at the 2019 Venice Biennale), and Hamza Walker (director of LAXART in Los Angeles). Each curator will oversee their respective location: König in Basel, Li in Hong Kong, and Walker in Miami Beach. The project's theme will center on the art market as a historical site of exchange, commerce, and competition, exploring concepts of value, infrastructure, success, failure, and authorship. Further details, including the project title and participating artists, are expected in autumn 2019. Art Basel was founded in 1970 by Swiss gallerists Ernst Beyeler, Trudl Bruckner, and Balz Hilt. Its first overseas edition launched in Miami Beach in 2002, followed by Hong Kong in 2013.
