Art Basel Qatar 2026 Debuts with Curated Solo-Show Model in Doha

festival-fair · 2026-04-19

Art Basel Qatar launched its inaugural edition in Doha from early February through February 7, 2026, presenting a deliberately scaled-down fair with 87 exhibitors and 84 artists across M7 and Doha Design District. Artistic director Wael Shawky implemented a solo-show format under the conceptual framework 'Becoming,' reflecting Qatar's rapid development and offering unprecedented visibility for MENASA region artists. The fair featured notable presentations including Adel Abidin's 'The Revolt' at Galerie Tanit, Rashid Rana's 'Fractured Moment' at Chemould Prescott Road priced at USD 30,000 with proceeds for Gaza relief, and blue-chip historical works by Pablo Picasso, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Philip Guston, and Georg Baselitz. Beyond the fair venues, international visitors experienced Jenny Holzer's light commission 'SONG' at the Museum of Islamic Art, the 'Empire of Light' exhibition on Afghan heritage, and 'we refuse_d' at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art featuring Samia Halaby. The nomadic museum project 'Rahaal' in Zekreet's nature reserve, co-organized by Mohammed Rashid Al-Thani and William Cooper, offered desert installations by Richard Serra and Olafur Eliasson. Art Basel's chief artistic officer Vincenzo De Bellis emphasized creating a fair centered on regional culture while acknowledging commercial realities, with collectors expressing long-term commitment despite geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty in the Gulf region.
