Art Basel postpones 2021 Basel edition to September, expands digital programming
Art Basel has rescheduled its Basel edition from June to September 23–26, 2021, citing ongoing pandemic uncertainties. The fair will maintain its traditional venue at Messe Basel. Global Director Marc Spiegler acknowledged that vaccination efforts have begun globally but emphasized that 2021 remains a complex year for planning. He expressed hope that September would allow for a return to physical events in a post-pandemic context. Alongside the postponed in-person fair, Art Basel will launch three thematic Online Viewing Rooms throughout the year. The first, 'OVR: Pioneers' (March 24–27), will spotlight artists who have broken new ground aesthetically, conceptually, or socio-politically. A second curator-organized OVR is scheduled for June 16–19. A November edition titled 'OVR:2021' will feature artworks created during the current year. All galleries that participated in Art Basel editions from 2016 through 2021 are invited to apply for these digital platforms. Further details about the digital initiatives will be announced in coming months. The decision reflects continued adaptation to COVID-19 restrictions affecting large-scale international gatherings.
