Art Basel Miami Beach 2004: Market Leader in the Americas

market-auction · 2026-04-23

The second edition of Art Basel Miami Beach, held from December 4 to 7, 2004, confirmed its status as the leading commercial art event in the Americas, designed for American and South American collectors who favor contemporary over modern works. European attendance was minimal. The fair featured 175 booths and strong sales, reflecting market trends: Japanese art remained in high demand, with Tomio Koyama Gallery selling drawings by Nara for $6,000 to $75,000. Figurative painting, especially by young German artists, was popular; Bernier-Eliades Gallery sold Daniel Richter's large figurative painting 'La révélation des bons' for $250,000, up from $65,000 a year earlier. Richter is slated for his first solo exhibition at Zwirner in New York next spring. Damien Hirst's large-format Spot Painting sold at Gagosian Gallery for approximately $425,000, the highest reported transaction at the fair. Hirst, associated with White Cube, recently repurchased a dozen of his works from collector Charles Saatchi for $15 million, signaling his control over his oeuvre. Berlin gallerist Burkhard Riemschneider noted that American collectors approach art shopping with speed and focus on established names represented by US galleries. Despite Miami Beach's reputation as a retirement haven, local collectors opened their homes to visitors during the fair.
