Art Basel Miami 2021: Highlights from a Subdued but Resilient Art Week

The 2021 Art Basel Miami Beach, along with its art week, attracted crowds that were almost back to pre-COVID levels, although the fair felt a bit quieter this time. In addition to the main event, there were various smaller fairs and exhibitions. One standout was Es Devlin's 'Five Echoes' for Chanel N°5’s centennial, a stunning labyrinth filled with over a thousand plants in the Design District. The Institute of Contemporary Art featured Betye Saar's 'Serious Moonlight,' which delved into Black identity and feminism through immersive installations from 1980 to 1998. Michael Rosenfeld Gallery showcased 'Manhattan – City of Ambition,' inspired by a 1921 film. Superblue launched 'Every Wall Is a Door' in Allapattah, while the Margulies Collection exhibited Arte Povera works. Maurizio Cattelan also returned with an installation of taxidermied pigeons.
