Art Basel introduces sliding-scale booth fees to support smaller galleries
Art Basel will implement a sliding-scale pricing model for booth fees starting with its 2019 Swiss edition, reducing costs for smaller galleries while increasing them for larger ones. Smaller galleries will pay 760 CHF per square meter (8% less than the previous flat rate of 830 CHF), while larger galleries will pay 905 CHF per square meter (9% more). The annual 5% price increase has also been frozen. The same model will apply to Art Basel Miami Beach in 2019 and Art Basel Hong Kong in 2020. Additional reductions apply to the Statement and Features sections: Statement booths drop from 12,000 to 10,000 CHF, and Features booths from 25,000 to 20,000 CHF. Galleries on the upper level of the main section receive a 20% discount in the first year and 10% in the second. The move follows a suggestion by David Zwirner at the New York Times Art Leaders Network conference in Berlin in April 2018, who proposed that larger galleries subsidize smaller ones. Thaddaeus Ropac praised the initiative as a positive signal for the art system. Frieze has also adopted a tiered pricing structure for its Los Angeles debut in February 2019, and FIAC implemented similar changes for its 2018 edition (October 18–21), with small booth fees down 5.3% and large booth fees up 2.2% on average. The Lafayette section for emerging galleries costs around 290 EUR per square meter. Despite these changes, total participation costs remain high due to personnel, accommodation, transport, and insurance.
