Art Basel Awards Honor 33 Medallists Including Barbara Kruger, Arthur Jafa, and Precious Okoyomon

Art Basel has revealed the 33 medallists for its second annual awards program, celebrating a range of contributors in contemporary art. The Icon category features female artists such as Barbara Kruger, Howardena Pindell, and Jenny Holzer. Kruger examines power dynamics, Pindell transitioned to autobiographical themes after an accident, and Holzer employs language in her public projections. Among the established medallists are filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Arthur Jafa, Theaster Gates, and María Magdalena Campos-Pons. Emerging talents include Precious Okoyomon, Farah Al Qasimi, and Carla Gueye. Additionally, the Diriyah Biennale Foundation and Anton Vidokle are among the honorees. Vincenzo de Bellis, the awards jury chair, emphasized the group’s diversity. The medallists will be celebrated at Art Basel in June 2024, with a future edition planned for 2026.
