Art Basel asks galleries to withhold marquee works until VIP preview

festival-fair · 2026-04-24

Art Basel is rolling out a fresh initiative called Basel Exclusive for its major Swiss fair happening in June. This program mandates that galleries keep their standout pieces under wraps until the First Choice VIP preview on June 16, avoiding any pre-fair sneak peeks or online promotions. The aim is to bring back the thrill of discovering art in person, moving away from the current trend of online sales through PDFs and social media. Vincenzo de Bellis, the chief artistic officer, emphasized that this will help "restore the value of being present," similar to the Avant Première in Paris. About 170 galleries, like Hauser & Wirth and Gagosian, will participate, with Iwan Wirth calling it an "anticipation injection" for fairgoers.
