Art Basel 2016: Manzoni leads sales with $7.6M Achrome

At Art Basel 2016, which opened to the public on June 16, major sales were already concluded during previews. Hauser & Wirth sold Paul McCarthy's 'Tomato Head (Green)' from Unlimited to a private American collection for $4.75 million, along with two other McCarthy works ($650,000 and $575,000), Vija Celmins' 'Sea Drawing with Whale' for $1.5 million, and two Maria Lassnig paintings for $1.2 million and $550,000. David Zwirner sold two Giorgio Morandi works for over $1 million each, plus pieces by Bridget Riley, Luc Tuymans, Bruce Nauman, and Josef Albers to Asian collectors. Gagosian placed a Rudolf Stingel painting for $3.5 million and a Damien Hirst 'Pills Cabinet' for $4.2 million. Massimo De Carlo sold an unpublished Stingel from 2014 to a European collector for about $1.8 million. Mnuchin Gallery sold a Brice Marden for $4 million and John Chamberlain's 'Honest 508' for $3 million to Miami collector Marty Margulies. Dominique Lévy Gallery achieved the highest reported price: Piero Manzoni's 'Achrome' for approximately €7 million ($7.6 million), and Frank Stella's 'Slieve Moree' from 1964 for $5.9 million.
