Arsura: gruppo nanou's Choreography of Body, Light, and Sound
The performance 'Arsura' by gruppo nanou premiered at Tendance, a festival in Latina, Italy, challenging the notion of a solo choreography. Instead, it presents a complex interplay of three bodies: a body-figure (performer Rhuena Bracci), a body-light, and a body-sound. The figure, also seen in 'Canto primo. Miasma | Arsura' (2021) with the band OvO, is de-individualized by a red dress and veil, becoming pure corporeal sign. Light, curated by Marco Valerio Amico, serves as a dramaturgical engine, creating temporal and spatial curvature through chromatic fluctuations, notably red. Sound design incorporates voices, glitch pointillism, and references to Ryoji Ikeda and James Blake, forming a material body-sound that collides with and interferes with the other bodies. The work builds on gruppo nanou's ongoing research into body languages and light (since 2017's 'Il colore si fa spazio'), while interrogating choreographic writing with their characteristic austerity.
