Ars Electronica Center Reopens with AI-Focused Renovation in Linz

institutional · 2026-05-04

The Ars Electronica Center in Linz, known as the 'Museum of the Future,' has reopened after a major renovation marking its tenth anniversary and the fortieth anniversary of the Ars Electronica festival. The new program, titled Compass – Navigating the Future, aims to help visitors navigate an increasingly technological society. The renovation cost €4 million, with €2.5 million from the city of Linz and €1.5 million from Ars Electronica itself. All exhibitions have been redesigned, one floor converted into a lab, and guided tours, workshops, and school programs rebuilt from scratch, according to artistic director Gerfried Stocker. Topics include neuroscience, robotics, prosthetics, autonomous mobility, genetic engineering, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence. A dedicated section, Understanding AI, explains neural networks and lets visitors train one using interactive stations. The Machine Learning Studio allows experimentation with practical applications like self-driving cars and facial recognition robots. The reopening began with a launch event on May 27, followed by a special program running until July 21, with themed weekends covering machine intelligence, digital geography, play and research, cyborgs, brain evolution, and the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. A second opening night on June 24 will debut three new exhibition paths: AI x Music, Mirages & Miracles, and the Children’s Research Laboratory.
