Ars Electronica Center Celebrates 25 Years of Future Lab with Interdisciplinary Programs
The Ars Electronica Center in Linz, Austria, marked the 25th anniversary of its Future Lab in 2021 with year-long initiatives extending through September 2022. The Future Lab, part of the Ars Electronica ecosystem since 1996, fosters collaboration between art and science in fields such as virtual reality, robotics, swarm behavior, and creative AI. Among the anniversary events was 'Memo Futurum,' a project asking participants to record audio answering 'How do you see yourself in 25 years?'; these recordings will be pressed onto vinyl records and sealed in a glass case for 25 years, with the project restarting in 2046. Another initiative, 'Hybrid Space,' offers an interactive space where museum visitors can meet and interact with online visitors, who control a robot to navigate the physical museum in real time. The Future Lab also published its first book, 'Alchemists of the Future,' authored by Andreas J. Hirsch, drawing on conversations with current and alumni team members, as well as international mentors, partners, and clients from academia, industry, and the arts. The center continues to invest in a 'Renaissance-style artistic workshop' laboratory that researches art, science, technology, and the future, presenting exhibitions, research projects, large-scale projections, and workshops on topics from AI to neuroscience, robotics, automation, genetic engineering, and biotechnology.
