Ars Electronica 2016: Radical Atoms Explores Bit-Atom Convergence in Linz

festival-fair · 2026-05-05

The 2016 edition of Ars Electronica, titled Radical Atoms, takes place in Linz from September 8 to 12. The festival, now over thirty editions old and the longest-running of its kind, features a dense program of exhibitions, performances, conferences, and the Prix Ars Electronica award ceremony where Golden Nicas are presented. The theme focuses on creatives, engineers, and scientists working on systems connecting bits and atoms, described as 'alchemists of our time'. A highlight is the European premiere of DRONE 100 – Spaxels over Linz, a performance with 100 luminous drones dancing over the Danube, developed in collaboration with Prof. Hiroshi Ishii of the MIT Media Lab. The teaser video introduces the theme.
