ARoS Museum Announces €40M Expansion with James Turrell
The ARoS Aarhus Art Museum in Denmark has unveiled plans for a €40 million expansion project titled "The Next Level." The initiative, developed in collaboration with American artist James Turrell, is set to open in 2021. The expansion will include a 1,400-square-meter underground gallery and two Turrell installations, including the spectacular "The Dome," also partially underground. The project originated from a proposal by museum director Erlend G. Høyersten and will be realized with Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects. A digital rendering video showcases the spatial layout. The expansion will enhance the museum's collection, which is renowned for Olafur Eliasson's rainbow-colored rooftop installation from 2011. Høyersten stated, "The project will fuse art and architecture and transform the journey through the museum's halls into a more engaging experience for the public. I like to think of the museum as a fitness center for the mind; the expansion is based on this idea."
