Arnolfo di Cambio's Apostle and Tino di Camaino's Angels Return to Florence's Museo dell'Opera del Duomo
Timothy Verdon, director of the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, expressed profound satisfaction over the return of three early 14th-century sculptures: an Apostle by Arnolfo di Cambio and two angels holding cloth by Tino di Camaino. The works had been in the Torrigiani collection for a long time after leaving the Cathedral due to demolitions in 1587. The Apostle was part of the Dormitio Virginis complex on the south facade tympanum and is the only original piece from that group remaining in Florence; others are at the Bode Museum in Berlin. The angels originally decorated the tabernacle of Bishop Antonio D'Orso's funerary monument, which was moved and modified over centuries but restored to its original position in the early 20th century. The sculptures reappeared on the market at the last Florence Biennale d'Antiquariato, offered by the Torrigiani family at a price well below market value, and were acquired by the museum through Galleria Mehringer Benappi.
