Armory Show New York 2019: 25th Edition Launches Gramercy International Prize

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

The Armory Show in New York celebrates its 25th anniversary from March 7 to 10, 2019, with a preview on March 6. A new award, the Gramercy International Prize, debuts this year, offering the winning gallery a free stand and visibility. The prize is won by Ramiken, a mysterious New York gallery that will present works by artists Darja Bajagić (b. 1990, Montenegro) and Andra Ursuţa (b. 1979, Romania). The initiative supports emerging galleries, following similar moves by Frieze New York and Art Basel, which reduced exhibition fees for young galleries last year. The fair's talk program features a symposium of critics, writers, curators, and artists, including Sarah Douglas (editor-in-chief of ARTnews), Jennifer Krasinski (director of Artforum), writers Linda Yablonsky, Rhonda Lieberman, and Tobi Haslett, gallerist Mitchell Algus, Istanbul Biennial director Bige Örer, Toronto Biennial curator Candice Hopkins, and artists Betty Tompkins, Ryan Gander, and Carroll Dunham. Topics include rewriting historical narratives, unresolved aspects of American identity, the link between art and activism in the age of social media, and changing meanings of sexuality and provocation in cultural and media wars. The fair takes place at Piers 92 & 94, 711 Twelfth Avenue, New York.
