Armin Linke: The City as Archive at Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz
At Palazzo Grifoni Budini Gattai, the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max-Planck-Institut presents Armin Linke: The City as Archive. Florence, curated by Hannah Baader and Costanza Caraffa. The exhibition combines Linke's contemporary photographs with historical images from the Fototeca, exploring Florence as a living archive beyond tourist routes. Linke (born 1966 in Milan) captures sites from the Archivio di Stato to the Archivio Gucci, including the Istituto Geografico Militare, Erbario Centrale, Museo Galileo, La Specola, Opificio delle Pietre Dure, Opera di Santa Croce, Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Archivi Storici dell'Unione Europea, Istituto Agronomico per l'Oltremare, Osservatorio di Arcetri, and Fondazione Alinari, with images of the flood and war destruction. The installation uses empty shelves from the former Fototeca as signs of change. The project unfolds in twenty-three chapters across archives, museums, and specialist collections. An animated video storyboard with field recordings and a sound composition by Giuseppe Ielasi accompanies the exhibition for the 18th edition of Lo schermo dell'arte. The research materials will be published in the volume The City as Archive by Viaindustriae in early 2026.
