Armenian filmmaker Artavazd Pelechian premieres Nature at Fondation Cartier after 27-year hiatus

exhibition · 2026-04-20

The Fondation Cartier in Paris hosts the premiere of Nature (2020), the first film by Armenian director Artavazd Pelechian in 27 years, alongside his 1975 documentary The Seasons, running until March 7, 2021. At 82, Pelechian, who was raised in Leninakan (now Gyumri) and studied at VGIK in Moscow, began his filmmaking journey in the 1960s with innovative near-wordless films that merged documentary and fiction. He is known for his technique of 'distance montage' and gained fame in France during the 1980s. Nature showcases ecological disasters accompanied by classical music, while The Seasons illustrates the lives of farmers and sheep through the changing seasons. Despite a dedicated fanbase, Pelechian's work is not widely recognized beyond cinephile communities.
