Armando Testa: Advertising Genius or Artist? Major Turin Exhibition Explores the Boundary

A major exhibition at the Sale Chiablese of the Musei Reali di Torino, titled 'Tutti gli 'ismi' di Armando Testa,' explores the blurred line between advertising and fine art through the work of Armando Testa (Turin, 1917–1992). Curated by Gianfranco Maraniello and Gemma De Angelis, the show presents framed posters, RAI archive footage of his iconic Caroselli commercials, and artworks that reveal his deep engagement with avant-garde movements like Dadaism, Surrealism, and Fluxus. Highlights include a 1988 interview where Testa discusses how art movements both inspired and challenged his marketing strategies, fluorescent ink posters from the 1950s, and pieces referencing Mondrian's color theory and Donald Judd's minimalism. The exhibition also features drawings demonstrating Gestalt principles, unsettling finger-themed paintings, phonetic wordplay, and sculptures of crosses where the tilted vertical axis evokes a head uniting Christ and the cross.
