Arman's American Journey: Retrospective at Centre Pompidou

exhibition · 2026-04-23

From September 22, 2010, to January 10, 2011, the Centre Pompidou in Paris showcases a retrospective of Arman (Armand Pierre Arman), featuring almost 120 pieces. This exhibition highlights his artistic journey characterized by themes of accumulation, destruction, cutting, and combustion. Regarded as the most American among French artists, Arman relocated to New York in 1963 and became a U.S. citizen on January 31, 1972. In 1962, David Galloway reflects on his visit to the Albright-Knox Gallery, where Seymour H. Knox purchased Arman's 'Toccata and Fugue.' Arman’s inaugural solo exhibition took place at the Walker Art Center in 1964, and he created public sculptures globally, including 'Ascent of the Blues' in Memphis in 1987.
