Arles 2016: Street Photography, Luma Lab, and Prix Découverte

festival-fair · 2026-04-24

The 2016 edition of Les Rencontres d'Arles runs until September 25 across multiple venues. Under director Sam Stourdzé, the festival groups around 40 exhibitions into thematic sequences, including 'Singulier!' featuring Hara Kiri photomontages, construction of the Statue of Liberty, and Sébastien Lifshitz's cross-dressing collection. Street photography exhibitions contrast Sid Grossman's tense retrospective with Ethan Levitas and Eamonn Doyle's calculated approaches; Levitas shares space with Garry Winogrand. Don McCullin's retrospective shifts focus from war to social critique and nature. 'Tear My Bra' examines cinema's influence on African photography. Prix Découverte winner Sarah Waiswa documents an albino African woman. Laia Abril investigates abortion; Stéphanie Solinas creates a documentary sculpture about the Lustucru hall. Luma Foundation presents 'Systematically Open?' curated by artists Elad Lassry, Walead Beshty, Zanele Muholi, and Collier Schorr. Muholi, a visual activist for South Africa's black LGBTI community, turns the camera on herself. Schorr dialogues with Anne Collier on female body figuration.
