Arjan Martins Reflects on Black Collectorship and Career Milestones Amid Multiple Exhibitions

artist · 2026-04-23

Arjan Martins, a 62-year-old artist, raises concerns about the ownership of Black art in Brazil in light of the financial achievements of younger Black creators. Since 2016, he has been represented by A Gentil Carioca and is currently showcasing new pieces in his solo exhibition, Hemisfério 1, at the São Paulo gallery, which runs until November 12. Additionally, his artwork is included in three exhibitions in Rio: the 34th São Paulo Biennial at the Museu de Arte do Rio until January 22, Passado Presente: 200 Anos Depois at Centro Cultural da PGE-RJ, and Atos de Revolta at MAM Rio until February 26, 2023. Starting November 19, he will display a 2019 piece at Inhotim's Galeria Lago. A recipient of the 2018 Prêmio PIPA, Martins has been active in the art scene for 20 years, launching his first solo exhibition in 2002.
