Arin Dwihartanto Sunaryo's Solo Exhibition 'Terra Nova: Bentang Lain' Opens at Kohesi Initiatives in Yogyakarta

Indonesian artist Arin Dwihartanto Sunaryo unveiled his solo exhibition 'Terra Nova: Bentang Lain (Other Scapes)' at Kohesi Initiatives in Yogyakarta. The show featured over twenty new tableaux and sculptural works that demonstrate his signature approach of using terrestrial materials. Upon entering the darkened gallery space, visitors were immediately confronted by two fractured paintings titled Fissura and Fissura #2, both created in 2025. These earth-toned compositions incorporate volcanic ash from Mount Merapi along with palm oil charcoal and coal, overlaid with large resin shards that create deliberately broken surfaces. Sunaryo has developed a distinctive artistic practice centered on pigments derived from organic substances like ash, mud, soil, and coffee grounds. Working with such unconventional materials demands exceptional precision during the creative process. This technical mastery results in artworks that possess a dynamic quality reminiscent of cosmic fusion—the same energetic processes that power stars including our sun. The exhibition title 'Terra Nova' suggests new territories while 'Bentang Lain' translates to 'Other Scapes,' indicating alternative landscapes explored through Sunaryo's material investigations.
