ArcoMadrid 2021 Postponed to July Due to Pandemic

festival-fair · 2026-04-27

For the first time in nearly 40 years, ArcoMadrid, the contemporary art fair in Madrid, will be held in July (7–11) instead of its traditional late February slot. The decision was made by IFEMA, the fairground operator, and the organizing committee led by director Maribel López. The postponement, announced over five months in advance, was driven by the surge in COVID-19 cases in Madrid and the desire to ensure international travel and commercial success for galleries. The 40th edition will feature a special anniversary program curated by María Inés Rodríguez, Sergio Rubira, and Francesco Stocchi, with participation from major global galleries. Gallery reactions are mixed: Manuel Fernández-Braso, president of Arte Madrid, welcomed the move, noting it separates Arco from Art Basel by three weeks and may boost the market. However, satellite fair directors express concern. Enrique Polanco of JustMad criticized July as inappropriate, preferring September. Mónica Álvarez of Drawing Room fears cancellation if conditions don't improve and suggests moving all smaller fairs to April–May. Meanwhile, Estampa, the Spanish collectors' fair, remains scheduled for November 19–21 at IFEMA with 80 galleries.
