Arcipelago Italia: Mario Cucinella's Pavilion for 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale

architecture-design · 2026-05-04

Mario Cucinella has unveiled his curatorial concept for the Italian Pavilion at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, which is set to launch on May 26, 2018. Titled "Arcipelago Italia," the pavilion highlights Italy's internal regions, which represent 60% of the land and house 25% of the populace, both of which are experiencing challenges of depopulation and an aging demographic. Cucinella advocates for "creative empathy" and a design approach that encourages participation. The exhibition is divided into three major sections: "Itinerari," "Futuro," and "Progetti Sperimentali," showcasing five projects from Barbagia, Valle del Belice, Matera, Camerino, and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. Funded by €600,000 from MiBACT, the pavilion attracted over 500 project entries. Thematic activities will commence in June 2018.
