Arci criticizes Sangiuliano's shift in 'Per Chi Crea' grant for under-35 artists

The program, funded by SIAE through 10% of private copying levies, was established in 2016 and first implemented in 2019, suspended during the pandemic, and reactivated in 2022 under then-Minister Dario Franceschini with the goal of fostering intercultural exchange. Sangiuliano's directive, issued on February 9, 2023, eliminates references to intercultural dialogue and instead prioritizes projects that strengthen young people's sense of belonging to the nation and highlight Italy's cultural contributions. Arci, a cultural association, has protested the change, arguing it replaces open exchange with sterile national celebration and disadvantages immigrant-origin artists who draw on hybrid cultural backgrounds. Sangiuliano defended the shift, stating he is proud to emphasize the nation, a term enshrined in the Italian Constitution. The controversy raises questions about whether promoting Italian culture must come at the expense of intercultural dialogue.
