Archivio Claudio Cintoli launched in Jesi to preserve artist's legacy

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

Nearly 50 years after his death, the Archivio Claudio Cintoli has been established in Jesi, Italy, to catalog and promote the work of the prolific Italian artist (1935–1978). Born in Imola, Cintoli spent his childhood in Porto Recanati during WWII and later studied painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome. His career spanned Neo-Dada, Nouveau Réalisme, Fluxus, Pop Art, Arte Povera, Hyperrealism, and Conceptual Art, without belonging to any single movement. He worked across painting, sculpture, critical writing, muralism, performance, ready-made, photography, and video. Notable works include the 1964 mural for the Piper club in Rome, the "Giardini" series from his New York period (1965–68), and the 1972 performance "Crisalide" at Palazzo Taverna in Rome. His diaries, held at the GNAM in Rome, document his eclectic practice. The archive, an initiative of AMIA with support from Giancarlo Cintoli and Paola Douglas Scotti Cintoli, is chaired by Paola Ballesi and will collaborate with the Accademia delle Belle Arti di Macerata. Students will conduct much of the cataloging. The association was presented at Palazzo Bisaccioni in Jesi, which hosted a major Cintoli retrospective in 2020.
