Archivio Aperto Festival in Bologna Spotlights 1960s Experimental Film

The Archivio Aperto festival in Bologna has launched a new section, Art and experimental film, dedicated to experimental filmmaking from the Super8 era and other small formats. Organized by Home Movies, the festival runs from November 30 to December 2, 2018, and aims to rescue and screen forgotten experimental films from the 1960s and 1970s by Italian artists. The program includes talks, installations, and screenings across institutional spaces and private galleries in Bologna. Key events include a screening of Tonino De Bernardi's 'Il quadrato. Definizione di spazio' at Home Movies on November 30, a focus on Valentina Berardinone at Galleria de' Foscherari, and a focus on Franco Vaccari at P420 on December 1. On December 2, at MAMbo, the collaborative film 'Shaping negation' (1970) by Francesco Leonetti, Ugo Mulas, and Arnaldo Pomodoro will be presented, followed by a meeting with artist Fernando De Filippi and screenings of his restored films from the 1970s, including 'La rivoluzione privata' (1974) and others. The festival highlights the parallel paths of artists and amateur filmmakers who independently explored cinema, influencing mainstream media. Many films were recovered from private archives and artists' studios, restored for the event.
