Architects and Designers Respond to Trump's Border Wall Proposal

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

President Donald Trump's announcement of a 'beautiful' wall along the US-Mexico border has provoked a wave of architectural and design responses, ranging from ironic to environmentally conscious. The wall, estimated to cost $20-25 billion, would extend the existing 1,100 km barrier. In Europe, German site Der Postillon parodied the project with 'Börder Wåll,' an IKEA-style kit requiring thousands of birch panels and screws. Mexican firm Estudio 3.14 proposed 'Prison Wall,' a pink structure crossing over 3,000 km, incorporating a shopping mall and prison capable of holding 11 million people, in homage to Luis Barragán's color palette. US-based DOMO Architecture + Design offered 'Beautifying the Border,' replacing barbed wire with underground ditches to preserve landscape views. In Italy, collective AoS – Architecture of Shame, active since 2015, analyzed the wall as an 'architecture of shame,' presenting research at the Venice Architecture Biennale and planning initiatives for Matera 2019. The wall's divisive potential is already evident, regardless of its physical realization.
