Architect Giancarlo Leone published an open letter criticizing the new fire escape staircase installed on the lateral facade of the Teatro Massimo Vincenzo Bellini in Catania. The staircase, made of glass and iron, was designed by engineer Marco Muratore in collaboration with the city's technical office and approved by the Municipality of Catania and the Sovrintendenza. Leone calls it a disrespect to the architectural and cultural heritage of the city, sparking a debate among architects and institutions. Some argue that a replica would have been a historical fake, while others stress the need for better planning. The theater, opened on November 10, 1882, is one of Italy's most beautiful with renowned acoustics. The staircase is located on Via Leonardi, near Piazza Università and Piazza Duomo, and Leone argues it fails to respect the urban context, turning its back on the sea. He criticizes the designers, the mayor, and the superintendent for mediocrity.
