Archigram cofounder Dennis Crompton dies at 89, leaving legacy of experimental architecture

other · 2026-04-20

Dennis Crompton, a founding member of the influential Archigram collective, has died at eighty-nine. Born in Blackpool in 1935, he helped establish the group in London in 1961 alongside Peter Cook, Warren Chalk, Ron Herron, David Greene, and Michael Webb. Archigram began as a magazine before becoming known for visionary concepts that blended emerging technologies with pop culture, famously never constructing a physical building. Among their most celebrated ideas was the 'Plug-In City' (1963-66), a modular urban vision of prefabricated homes that Crompton helped initiate. He taught architecture for over thirty years at the Architectural Association School starting in 1965 and later at the Bartlett School of Architecture. After Archigram dissolved in 1975, Crompton dedicated himself to archiving the group's work, resulting in a major touring exhibition in 1994 and a comprehensive monograph in 2018. In 2019, M+ Museum in Hong Kong acquired the complete archive. In a 2020 Dezeen interview, Crompton defended the practical relevance of Archigram's work, stating it was not merely about colorful drawings. Fellow cofounder Peter Cook recently honored him as the 'Archigram keeper of the Flame'.
