Archie Moore's Golden Lion-winning 'kith and kin' debuts in Brisbane
The installation 'kith and kin' by Kamilaroi/Bigambul artist Archie Moore, which secured Australia's inaugural Golden Lion at the 2024 Venice Biennale, is currently showcased at the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) in Brisbane. This artwork features hand-drawn white chalk designs covering the walls, depicting 65,000 years of the artist's maternal heritage alongside his English and Scottish paternal ancestry. A reflective pool serves as a tribute to Indigenous individuals who lost their lives in police custody, with 557 inquests recorded from 1991 to 2023 suspended above. Gifted by Creative Australia to both QAGOMA and Tate, London, the installation is noted by curator Ellie Buttrose for immersing viewers in a First Nations perspective on time. Moore, raised in Tara, Queensland, studied at Gateway TAFE and Queensland University of Technology before receiving a Samstag Scholarship to pursue studies in Prague. The exhibition is open until 18 October 2026.
