Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang to Plead Guilty as Chinese Agent

Federal officials announced on Monday that Eileen Wang, the 58-year-old mayor of Arcadia, California, has consented to plead guilty to serving as an illegal agent for the Chinese government. In April, she faced a charge for acting unlawfully as a foreign government agent in the U.S. Wang was accused of promoting pro-Beijing articles at the behest of Chinese officials without the required notification to U.S. authorities. Following the allegations, she resigned from her role. Wang was elected to the city council in November 2022, with the mayoral position rotating among members. City manager Dominic Lazzaretto clarified that the investigation pertains solely to Wang's personal actions, which stopped after her December 2022 swearing-in. The offense could result in a maximum of 10 years in prison.
