ARB scraps mandatory two-year practice requirement for UK architects by 2028

architecture-design · 2026-08-19

The Architects Registration Board (ARB) will abolish its compulsory two-year professional practice prerequisite for architectural registration in the UK, starting on 31 December 2028. This announcement, made on 19 August 2026, is part of ARB's reforms to the Professional Practice Experience (PPE), which allows for varying durations based on personal training and experience. Alan Kershaw, the chair of ARB, highlighted the intention to guarantee high-quality practical experience for trainees. The new framework aims to provide learning institutions with flexibility and clarity for trainees. Additionally, ARB is updating its Standards, releasing new guidance, and launching a Trainee Record of Experience. All qualifications must adapt to the new framework by 31 December 2028, following a comprehensive review in 2025 and recent consultations.
