Apple Settles $250M Lawsuit Over Siri AI Marketing

Apple has reached a settlement of $250 million to resolve a class-action lawsuit that accused the company of misleading consumers regarding the AI capabilities of its Siri assistant. The Financial Times was the first to report this development. The lawsuit alleged that Apple overstated the functionality and readiness of its Apple Intelligence features, particularly the significantly enhanced Siri, which has not yet been fully realized. Plaintiffs contended that the marketing for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 suggested that sophisticated AI tools would be available sooner than they actually were, affecting consumer choices. Under the proposed settlement, eligible U.S. customers who purchased an iPhone 15 or iPhone 16 between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025, may receive up to $95 per device. Although Apple did not admit to any wrongdoing, it opted to settle. The company has been advertising a more advanced Siri since the introduction of Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024. This upgraded Siri is anticipated to operate similarly to ChatGPT or Claude, potentially utilizing Google Gemini, while newer reports indicate that Apple's upcoming iOS may allow users to select from various third-party large language models. This settlement precedes Apple's annual developer conference on June 8, where a preview of the AI-enhanced Siri is expected.
