Appennino bolognese: street art, Ontani, Aalto e Rocchetta Mattei

architecture-design · 2026-05-04

A journey through the Bolognese Apennines reveals four significant cultural landmarks. In October 2018, street artists in Marzabotto converted industrial structures into open-air galleries to honor the victims of the 1944 Nazi massacre. Deputy mayor Valentina Cuppi emphasized that the initiative seeks to promote urban revitalization and peace. In Vergato, artist Luigi Ontani designed stained-glass windows for the town hall and a new public fountain, inspired by Bernini, which is set to open in March. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Riola, created by Alvar Aalto in 1966, was finished in 1975. The Rocchetta Mattei in Grizzana Morandi, constructed for Count Cesare Mattei in the mid-19th century, showcases diverse architectural styles and reopened to visitors in 2015.
