Appeal to turn Raffaella Carrà's Rome apartment into a museum

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

Writer Jonathan Bazzi, a finalist for the 2020 Strega Prize, has launched an appeal to turn Raffaella Carrà's former apartment in Rome into a museum. The 400-square-meter property in the Vigna Clara district has been put on the market by real estate agency Remax through a reserved negotiation, and the listing is no longer online. Francesco Angeli, president of Arcigay Roma, has supported the proposal, urging the state—through local authorities, the Lazio Region, and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage—to acquire the home as a cultural landmark for the LGBTQIA+ community, reflecting Carrà's role as an icon. The apartment features nine bedrooms and nine bathrooms in a luxury complex known as the 'Hollywood of Rome,' with a park, tennis courts, and a pool. Separately, activist and former MP Vladimir Luxuria requested that Rome mayor Roberto Gualtieri name a square after Carrà, following Madrid's example where Plaza del Olivo will become Plaza Raffaella Carrà on July 6. Rome's culture commissioner Miguel Gotor, who chairs the toponymy commission, expressed support, though the process is lengthy. Carrà, who died on July 5, 2021, was a singer, dancer, actress, TV host, and author, named ambassador of love at the 2017 World Pride in Madrid.
