Apolide Festival's 20th Edition Forced to Relocate, Jeff Mills' Tomorrow Comes the Harvest Headlines

The Apolide Festival, celebrating its 20th anniversary, was forced to relocate from its longtime home at the Area Naturalistica Pianezze in Vialfré, Canavese, after the municipality banned the event citing environmental preservation. Organizers, who had worked for a year to maintain the festival's mission of reconnecting with nature, scrambled to find new venues. The festival took place from July 20 to 23, 2023, at the Cortile della Lavanderia a Vapore in Parco della Certosa di Collegno and the Magazzino sul Po in central Turin. The opening night on July 20 featured a standout performance by Tomorrow Comes the Harvest, a supergroup led by Detroit techno pioneer Jeff Mills, alongside tabla player Prabhu Edouard and French-Guyanese keyboardist Jean Phi-Dary. The trio, set to release their new album 'Evolution' on September 8, delivered a hypnotic, nearly two-hour set blending analog instruments and digital textures, fusing techno and fusion. Other performers included Theon Cross (Sons of Kemet), Hey! Himalaya, Società Cosmica, Saitün, and Avalanche Kaito. The festival also featured three stages: Apolide lounge, Boobs stage, and Main stage. Despite the setback, organizers hope to continue as an itinerant festival, embracing their 'apolide' (stateless) identity.
