Apnea: Interactive Installation on Migrant Crisis at Fondazione 107
On November 4, during Turin's art week, Fondazione 107 will present Apnea, an interactive and immersive artwork on migrants and the sea, created by the collective Officine Sintetiche. The project, winner of the Bando Ora! from Compagnia di San Paolo, began in 2015 by Turin-based artists Vanessa Vozzo and Stefano Sburlati. Since January 2016, they have collaborated with students from the University of Turin and Polytechnic of Turin to explore the emotional dimension of migrants crossing the sea. The installation comprises three environments: an exhibition of photographs and videos decontextualizing objects from the October 3, 2013 shipwreck in the Sicily Channel that killed 368 migrants; an immersive projection space with interactive seafloor experience and voices of the missing; and a 360-degree video of the seas around Lampedusa viewable via VR headset, also available on YouTube and the collective's website. The work runs concurrently with Amianto, a retrospective of Turin artist Federico Piccari.
